A Shopify clothing business with requirements beyond the storefront

This is a custom Shopify app development engagement: a made-to-order clothing business needed the workflow between its store and its factories to live somewhere it could own and keep changing. Sene Studio can route custom orders from Shopify to four garment factories and manage fit updates, remakes and fulfilment through an operating platform. Autonomous developed that foundation over an ongoing relationship beginning in 2022. Sene’s founders now extend it with Claude, with direct ownership of the code and a growing role in development.

According to Sene founder Mark Zheng, Sene had cycled through developers and struggled to find a suitable team on Upwork. Its requirements did not fit an off-the-shelf product. The relationship began with freelance fixes and grew into ongoing engineering as the operational work became clearer. There was already a thin pipeline; the task was to develop it into a platform the business could keep extending.

Putting the whole Shopify order workflow in one place

So instead of a pile of scripts nobody could follow, the business got one place where a Shopify order becomes a production job. Autonomous built Sene Hub, a Django application connecting Shopify records with the workflows behind production. It holds quiz records, order information, fit updates, remake handling, factory routing and fulfilment reconciliation. Work that does not need to hold a customer request open runs asynchronously.

The distinction matters for a made-to-order store. Payment is one milestone in a longer process. An order still needs the correct production information, the right manufacturing destination and a way for the team to see what happened next. The platform gives those steps an explicit place in the system instead of leaving the connections spread across individual scripts.

Four garment factories have different submission formats and status conventions. The Hub handles those differences through separate integrations while retaining a common order workflow. That gives Sene a consistent operational path even when the manufacturing destinations work differently.

Giving operations staff useful controls

The people who actually ship garments got buttons for the things automation cannot decide on its own. The operations console is the human-facing part of the platform. Autonomous developed and maintained the Vue dashboard after its initial setup by the previous agency. Staff can work fit updates, manage fabrics and stock thresholds, associate products with operational configuration and follow the fulfilment queue.

Controls include line-item version history, hold and release actions, Shopify synchronisation and reviewer attribution. These are practical tools for situations automation cannot simply dismiss: a garment needs to wait, an operator needs to inspect an earlier version, or a change needs an identifiable approver. Automated routing and operator decisions share the same underlying records.

The platform expanded over time alongside the catalogue and market rules. Standard-size international selling and product-specific custom-fit availability for Canada are examples of commercial decisions expressed across the storefront and operations layer.

Working alongside the people who own the business

Sene’s founders were active contributors throughout the relationship. Mark Zheng worked in the platform, and Ray Li contributed to the storefront and later took a larger role in its development. Their direct contributions made the platform a shared working environment.

The engineering relationship also crossed internal maintainer changes. Overlapping involvement helped preserve context as responsibility moved between people. Client-owned code and shared repositories allowed Sene’s team to continue participating directly rather than treating the platform as a supplier’s closed service.

The foundation now supports a different working relationship

By August 2026, storefront responsibility had moved to Ray Li as the founders became more self-sufficient with AI. Autonomous continues to support Sene with AI-related work, while Sene builds on the operating platform using Claude.

The result is a live foundation for the demonstrated workflows: custom orders, factory routing, fit updates, remakes and operational review. The shape of the relationship has changed as the client’s ability to build has grown. That is the value of an engineering partner whose work remains available to the business after responsibility shifts.
