From manual commerce operations to a Shopify-connected system.

SENE needed a commerce operation that could move beyond manual ordering and disconnected handoffs. Autonomous built the systems around Shopify, from custom ordering and customer-service visibility to the operational workflows that support the business after checkout.

What was in the way

SENE Studio's products are made to measure. Every order needs a customer's specific measurements before anything is cut or assembled, and production only starts once an order is placed.

Before this system existed, a Shopify order triggered a chain of manual work: someone copied sizing details into a spreadsheet, someone else emailed the factory, and customer service checked order status by calling the warehouse directly. The storefront, the factory, the warehouse and the customer-service team each kept their own records, with no shared system connecting them.

That structure could not scale. Every additional order added the same manual steps as the last, and manual re-entry created room for error at each hand-off.

This account draws on our direct delivery experience with SENE Studio and internal project records. Figures describing revenue, order volume or time saved are not included here until they are confirmed and approved for publication.

Challenge Details

  • Spreadsheet-driven ordering Orders arrived through Shopify, then moved into spreadsheets by hand. Sizing data was retyped, reconciled and re-checked at every step.
  • Fragmented systems The storefront, the factory, the warehouse and the customer-service team each worked from their own records, with no shared system connecting them.
  • Manual coordination load Keeping orders moving took constant manual follow-up between teams, time that could have gone into product and customer experience instead.
  • A structure that could not scale Each new order added the same manual steps as the last one. Growth meant more coordination work, not less.

We built the operating layer the storefront was missing.

  • Django backend A custom Python and Django backend connecting the storefront, production and fulfilment systems. Python · Django · PostgreSQL
  • Shopify custom ordering A custom Shopify theme with a measurement-based ordering flow, built for a made-to-order catalogue rather than a standard product grid. Shopify · Custom Theme · Liquid
  • Customer-service dashboards Dashboards that give the SENE team order status, production stage and customer context without checking a spreadsheet or calling the warehouse. React · Django API · Real-time
  • Production and warehouse integrations Factory and warehouse systems connected to the central platform, so an order moves without a manual hand-off between tools. API Integrations · Webhooks · Automation

Current State

  • Orders move without manual entry An order placed on the storefront reaches production and warehouse systems automatically, with no spreadsheet step in between.
  • Built to carry more volume The platform is designed so additional order volume does not require additional manual coordination.
  • An ongoing platform partnership Autonomous remains SENE Studio's operating partner for this system, continuing to build as the business changes.

More from this build

Delivery

How the system came together

Step 01

Discovery

Map the existing spreadsheet workflow, the systems it touched and the points where orders broke down.
Step 02

Design the ordering model

Define how measurements, pricing and production rules would live in Shopify and the backend, reviewed with SENE's team at each step.
Step 03

Build and integrate

Build the Django backend, the custom ordering flow and the factory and warehouse integrations, with staged testing along the way.
Step 04

QA and launch

Run test orders through the full path, from storefront to factory to warehouse, before switching production traffic over.
Step 05

Stabilise and keep building

Monitor the live system, resolve issues as they surface and continue extending the platform as SENE Studio's operations change.

What remains owned

Autonomous owns the Django backend, the custom ordering system and the integrations connecting Shopify to production and warehouse systems, including ongoing changes as the business evolves.

SENE Studio owns product, pricing, production capacity and customer-facing decisions. Factory and warehouse partners remain responsible for their own systems of record, with defined data hand-offs to the platform Autonomous maintains.
